Why join us?

Our aim is to reflect the communities and citizens we serve and mirror the workforce that we recruit from. Joining Hertfordshire County Council to support one of many of our service areas is a rewarding and challenging experience. From finance, HR and planning to cooks, catering and fire fighters, you will find variety and career development whatever your background. You could be working in an office, day care or residential location, school or library across our county from Hertford to Hemel Hempstead, Watford to Ware.

At HCC we are committed to providing services of the highest quality to children, young people and their families in Hertfordshire. A major element in achieving this standard is in the quality of staff who provide these services. HCC undertakes personal interviews as part of their recruitment process for certain posts that involve working with children and young people. The aim is to specifically assess the candidates suitability to work with children and young people through discussion about the candidates life experiences and personal qualities.

At Hertfordshire County Council, you will be part of an authority which values your work and encourages your creativity and ideas. We have many career opportunities to choose from with excellent training, development and benefits on offer. We are sure we will have the right position for you, whatever your background.

We want Hertfordshire to be a county of opportunity where people can live fulfilling lives in strong communities; where public services are offered in a way that encourages self reliance and reflect the diverse character of both individuals and places.

Equality and Diversity

Hertfordshire County Council is committed to achieving diversity and equality of opportunity both as a large employer of people and as a provider of services. In practice this means both working to ensure that Hertfordshire is free from discrimination, but also doing what we can to positively promote equality and diversity across the delivery of services and within our workforce.

Values and Behaviours

The Values and Behaviours are an important part of the Council for the Future transformation programme. Each employee has an important part to play in delivering the council's objectives and the values provide a reference point to ensure that, although each employee has different work responsibilities, everyone is working with a common purpose.

We want our future organisation to reflect the values of:

  • being citizen focused
  • making sure every penny counts
  • acting with integrity
  • getting things right and learning from our experiences
  • continuing to innovate.

The introduction of Values and Behaviours into our Performance Management and Development Scheme means that when conducting appraisals team members are assessed on 'how' they demonstrate the values and behaviours in their work, as well as 'what' they do to achieve their performance objectives. The values and behaviours are an integral part of the PMDS process and both are measured using ‘Outcomes’ at the end of year Appraisals.
