An enhanced Transforming Rehabilitation specification: Integrated Through the Gate (ITTG) was launched in April this year. It saw the introduction of Community Rehabilitation Company staff to deliver further support and co-ordination of support/ interventions to service users in custody preparing for release from prison. The service Shelter provides consists of a Resettlement Team working holistically to deliver a professional, impartial, pragmatic and outcome focused service to those serving a custodial sentence. Specifically, the work involves delivering housing, education training and employment, finance and debt interventions to aid an individual’s resettlement in what can sometimes be a challenging environment.
About the role
Working within the ‘Through the Gate’ Team, you’ll be expected to support multiple HMP locations within the Contract Package Area. Your main objectives will be to support the peer and volunteer programme within the prisons and to recruit, train and mentor Peers supporting delivery of Peer Advice Programmes within custody. You’ll also work in partnership with Resettlement Workers to ensure we deliver an inclusive customer focused service. Delivering training/group work to service-users in the areas of Employment, Finance, Benefit & Debt and Housing will be important too. And, when it comes to co-ordinating peers within the prisons to support the Resettlement service or undertaking inductions, triage or low-level advice signposting, again, we’ll count on you.
To succeed, you’ll need an understanding of the main issues affecting unemployment, homelessness and prisoners and experience of managing volunteers and developing peer support services in a target-led/results driven environment. If you have worked in the Criminal Justice system or directly with prisoners, even better, although this is not essential. What is for certain is that you’re proactive, client-focused, great at working with others as part of a team and respond quickly and positively to change. Respect for others opinions is important too, as is a willingness to apply creative thinking, challenge the status quo and introduce new ideas, methods and processes. The ability to type and use Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet is also required.
