Community Learning Development Worker

We are seeking to appoint a 37hrs per week Development Worker within the Community Learning Team.

The North Somerset Community Learning Team is part of a wider South West Community Learning Consortium with Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council.

The function of the team is to provide courses to vulnerable adults with few or no qualifications and those facing multiple barriers to engaging in learning and work. Target learners include individuals with physical or mental ill health, the long term unemployed, people in addiction recovery, people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, those with refugee or asylum status and those living in recognised areas of deprivation.

Using your allocated budget, you will be expected to organise a wide range of Community Learning courses to meet Education & Skills Funding Agency targets and the learning and skills needs of the local community within North Somerset. You will also need to use your own initiative to source new courses to meet the changing needs of our community. Courses will run in community venues at times best suited to meet learner access needs. Therefore, some flexibility around working hours will be needed.

You will need to build positive relationships with learners, tutors, employers and partner agencies through collaborative working to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes e.g. improved health, greater skills and knowledge and increased employability. Good communication, listening and negotiation skills are essential.

The successful candidate will need to have a Level 3 qualification in Education & Training or equivalent and some practical experience of working with a diverse group of learners. You will need to be computer literate, have good numeracy and literacy skills and be confident in using social media.

This post is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitations of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

For an informal discussion, please contact Beck Jones, Community Learning Team Leader on 01275 888459.

Anticipated interview date:   Monday 13 January 2020
