Newark and Sherwood District Council is committed to making the district a cleaner, safer and greener place to live, work and visit.  This is reflected in the objectives of our Community Plan and the new Environmental Services Business Unit will have this at the heart of its activities.

In order to deliver the Greener agenda across the district, and to allow the Council to achieve its sustainability aims, we are recruiting to the new post of Environmental Programme Officer. The successful candidate will work with the Park Rangers to manage Council owned parks and open spaces, developing these as community and educational venues to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. You will also plan, coordinate and deliver the ‘greening’ agenda outside of the spaces owned by the Council by directing green development across the district and supporting projects such as the Council’s tree planting scheme.

Applicants will have knowledge of, and a keen interest in, the environment, open spaces and climate issues, with experience of horticulture and grounds maintenance operations. You will successfully use your passion and experience to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders to meet your objectives and share your knowledge with other teams within the Council, such as Planning and Health & Community Relations, to support the development and delivery of strategies which will protect, promote and enhance our natural environment and improve the health and wellbeing of our residents.

In addition to this, you will take the lead on writing bids and grant applications to access funds which can support the Council in becoming more sustainable and reducing its carbon footprint. You will then manage projects and contracts to make the best use of resources to achieve these aims.

You will be able to demonstrate significant experience in a similar role, have excellent communication skills, experience of directing or supervising small teams and an organised and professional approach allowing you to manage competing deadlines. Due to the nature of the role, a flexible approach will be required and there may be some weekend work required to meet the needs of the role.

Based at the Council’s depot on Brunel Drive you will also be required to work regularly at Sconce and Devon Park, Vicar Water and other relevant locations throughout the district from Green Flag Parks to woodlands and nature reserves.
