Community Meals Helper/Driver

The Community Meals on Wheels Service delivers hot lunchtime meals to people in their own homes throughout North Somerset, seven days a week, including Bank Holidays. 


The service operates from two kitchens, based in Worle and Clevedon, with delivery rounds operating on a geographical basis from each kitchen.  The Helper Driver is responsible for the collection and delivery of heated, pre-packaged food to vulnerable individuals in the community in North Somerset between 11.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. each day.


As part of the delivery role, tasks can include: cutting up food, prompting people to take their medication, checking on people’s wellbeing and providing some social contact.  Helper Drivers are also required to monitor and feedback any concerns to the Service to help pre-empt any increase in difficulties for customers and avoid deterioration of their circumstances or health at home.


We are looking for caring, compassionate individuals who would like to help provide this essential service; ensuring people in need are supported with a personal approach and a warm meal in their own homes. 


For these vacancies we offer set contracted hours to meet the needs of the service. There are various rounds, days and hours available, but currently applicants would be required to provide some cover at weekends.  Additional hours may also be available on an overtime or casual basis to ensure effective service cover.


We also hold a list of people who would be able to support deliveries on a more ad hoc (casual contract) basis with no specific regular commitment required.  We sometimes look to our casual staff to cover annual leave of regular staff, sickness, and on occasions i.e. in the event of poor weather etc to bolster numbers supporting people with meals at home.  If you wish to apply for a casual Community Meals Helper/Driver positions, please see our separate advert (reference PCHD0120).


Helper/Driver applicants must hold a clean, valid driving licence. You should be able to work on your own, be a clear communicator, have some experience and understanding of supporting older and vulnerable people.  You should be organised and have ability to work to deadlines without direct supervision.  A knowledge of the North Somerset area would help.


For either role, no formal qualifications are required. A Basic Food Hygiene Certificate would be an advantage. 


Helper/Drivers may use a Council provided vehicle or their own vehicle (mileage paid), depending on vehicle availability. Applicants should be prepared to check the serviceability of the vehicle they are driving to ensure it remains roadworthy.


Successful applicants will be fully supported with training and shadowing opportunities as part of an induction and a be part of a dedicated staff team. Training will be given in NSC vehicle fleet checks, Food Hygiene, Safeguarding, medication prompting.


The role is extremely rewarding however, given the nature of the customer base, you may on occasions face challenging welfare situations.  Support is available from the office-based team to assist in addressing any difficulties encountered at the time, with opportunity to discuss any concerns further with the team manager.
