We are looking for Highway Inspectors to carry out Highway Safety Inspections as per our Statutory function

About the role

Highway Inspector

Grade 6

As a Highway Authority Brighton and Hove City Council  have a statutory duty to inspect and to ensure that the public highway is maintained in a safe condition in accordance with council policy and DfT guidance standards.  This duty includes undertaking routine inspections of all roads in the city at least twice a year, investigating and addressing reports/complaints and compiling reports for the council’s insurers arising from accident claims against the Highway Authority.

In order to fulfil this role a  highway inspector must have:

A good understanding of highways legislation specifically Sec 41 and 58 and Well Managed Highway Infrastructure.  

The skill to  judge the overall “risk” posed by a defect in order to assign an appropriate repair response time, taking into account both the severity of the defect and the likelihood of someone encountering it.

A sound knowledge of highways materials and construction and competence to recognise early signs of structural failure.

Good time management skills  and ability to  prioritise own workload, in particular with regard to inspections that must be completed as scheduled and complaints that must be  assessed in a timely manner.

Good communication skills both written and verbal and ability to work closely with  key stakeholders including local transport  operators, businesses, local communities, councillors and a variety of teams from across the City Council.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
