These are challenging times for Children’s Services nationwide, with particular issues for Child Protection Conference Services. An important issue is how we maintain our engagement with and respect for families we are serving within the current COVID constraints on meetings. We are learning all the time and working hard to make sure that we have a robust service for the future, building in successful changes developed of necessity. Establishing relationships with partner agencies is key in ensuring Child Protection Plans are effective in safeguarding children.
We are looking for an experienced professional to help us build on improvements to date and ensure a relevant service going forward – one which is in keeping with current thinking in children’s social work and Birmingham Children’s Trust’s overall improvement plan.
We use the Strengthening Families Framework to guide our approach in child protection conferences; our model creates positive relationships between families and professionals, ensuring families feel listened to and respected. We aim to consider the strengths and protective factors within the family rather than focusing solely on risk and harm. This provides a more balanced view of safety and risk.
You will work with the Head of Service and colleagues to actively develop policy and practice, being accountable for both service performance and quality assurance. You will be jointly responsible for supervising the thirteen Principal Officers and, for this reason, you will be fully conversant with the Strengthening Families Framework conferencing approach.
In this role, there is a careful balance to be achieved between forging positive, collaborative relationships with members of the wider Children’s Services; whilst remaining confident to challenge when needed. Having extensive experience in working within the Child Protection Conference System, you will be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of effective child protection planning and review and an understanding of the necessary inherent tension in that system.
You will be an experienced manager with skills in supervising senior staff and managing complex and challenging situations.
Birmingham Children’s Trust is a stimulating and supportive place to work. As a successful candidate, you will have access to solid management support both within the service and across the Trust as well as opportunities for professional development and education.
We look forward to receiving your application!
