Job Duties:

Modern Firefighters, no matter who they are or what background they come from, make a valuable contribution to the safety and wellbeing of the community. The role is not only about fighting fires; it's also about educating people on a wide number of safety issues, working with a range of partner organisations, conducting Home Safety visits and responding to a wide variety of emergency incidents.

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service (HFRS) values and respects the diversity of all its employees. We aim to recruit a workforce which represents the communities we serve by giving equal opportunities to all. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive organisation and are proud to be members of Women in the Fire Service, Asian Fire Service Association and Hertfordshire LGBT Partnership Trust. We ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and consistently at every stage of the recruitment process and consider reasonable adjustments for people who have a disability under our Disability Confident employer status.

The primary entry criteria being that ALL applicants MUST:
• Reside in Hertfordshire or in a directly adjoining postcode area
• Are 18 years old or over at the time you start the training course
• Hold a full & valid manual driving licence, enabling ‘unsupervised’ driving in the United Kingdom
• The right to work in the UK
• No unspent convictions (As defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974)
• GCSE Grade A* to Grade C, or Level 9-4 qualifications in English and Mathematics (or a recognised equivalent i.e. Basic/Key Skills Level 2). You will be asked to upload certificates when applying.

Appointments will always be made on the merit of the application and performance in the selection process – however, we are particularly encouraging applications from females and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates who are currently under-represented within HFRS.

We will contact you within couple of weeks of your application to confirm whether you will be invited to an Engagement session, which will be running in October and November 2020. Sessions will give a brief overview of the recruitment process, fitness requirements and expectations of the role.

Details of the selection stages and full information about the recruitment process are displayed on our website

If you are successful at every stage of the recruitment process you will be enrolled on the Operational Firefighter Apprenticeship click on the link for details of the standard required. Apprenticeships changed in 2016, when they became a key part of the Government’s agenda to upskill the nation’s workforce. Apprenticeships are not just for young people - they are for all ages. If you already have a degree you still qualify to be an apprentice, so long as the apprenticeship gives you a new skill that is relevant to your career development.

Closing date: 2nd November 2020
We recommend submitting your application early, as we are anticipating a high volume of applicants this year which means we may have to consider closing the application window early.
