Biomedical Scientist

Would you like to work in a unique and vibrant community in a stunning natural environment? If so, come and join our friendly team of experienced health service professionals in the beautiful Falkland Islands.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Falkland Islands Government’s Department of Health and Social Services laboratory facility. The department comprises Blood Sciences, Clinical Microbiology and a Food, Water & Environmental (FWE) testing laboratory.

The Role

We are looking for a HCPC registered BMS (Band 6 equivalent, though Band 5 applicants will be considered) to support the existing laboratory team as the department provides high levels of population surveillance screening for COVID-19. 

Any candidate with a specialist background in either Biochemistry, Haematology/Transfusion or Microbiology will be considered.  The skills of the successful candidate will be utilised to provide resilience to the current multi-disciplinary team. 

Depending on the candidate’s experience, training will be tailored to the individual, this is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills in a small but effective multi-disciplinary environment.

The Person

We are looking for someone with:

  • HCPC registration
  • Experience in working in Haematology/Transfusion or Microbiology
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Understanding of quality management systems, especially in relation to UKAS Accreditation
  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety requirements and procedures
  • Have extensive working knowledge of laboratory areas, including both practical and theoretical knowledge of the various methods employed

The Package

  • Initial 6 month Fixed Term Contract, with potential for extension by mutual agreement.
  • Starting Salary: £31k-38k per annum (pro-rated for part months worked), depending upon qualifications and experience.
  • 25% Gratuity paid upon successful completion of the contract.
  • Flights package for you to and from the Falkland Islands at the start and end of contract.
  • Housing for rent and a starter pack to help you get settled in.
