Greenspaces & Access Team Leader

Medway Council is looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic individual to manage the Greenspace Development and Access team. Medway is a Unitary Authority with a population of c. 280,000 located across the urban conurbations of Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Gillingham, as well as the rural area of the Hoo Peninsula.  Medway’s residents benefit from an extensive open space provision equivalent to over 13 Hyde Parks, with 8 Green Flag sites and numerous supportive Friends of Groups and forums.  Utilising both internal and external funds, plus s106s, the greenspace development team mange a programme of improvements to parks, play, sports and allotments. The team also manage the maintenance and legal protection of over 350km of rights of way and have just published our Rights of Way Improvement Plan. 

Why Medway? 30% of Medway is Internationally important for its wildlife, with the North Kent Marshes dominating the northern rural hinterland and species-rich chalk grasslands occurring along the southern urban fringe. The River Medway provides both important habitat and recreational opportunities, and as the manager for this team you will also be responsible for the development of three piers and river access.  This is a very special place where an experience 

The successful candidate will have experience of managing a team covering diverse interests; managing complex capital and revenue budgets; planning and s106 contributions and programming and securing funds to bring forward essential developments to improve the open space offer. You will speak with knowledge and enthusiasm of the importance of open space to key Council priorities such as the City of Culture, Child Friendly City and Health and Wellbeing, and will be an advocate with Members, Senior Officers, other council services and stakeholders.
