Senior Corporate Debt Officer

A new opportunity has arisen for an experienced motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Councils Corporate Debt Team. This is a great chance to work in an established team which provides the following service: 

  • Collection of unpaid council tax, business rates, housing benefit overpayments, sundry debt and other miscellaneous debts.
  • Legal action through the magistrates and county courts.
  • Referral of debts to and liaison with external contractors.
  • Recovering debts through other statutory methods (Attachment to earnings orders, direct earnings attachments, third party deductions). 

As part of this role, you can expect to undertake the following tasks: 

  • To supervise the team and organise their day-to-day work
  • Deal with complex cases, including complaints, in respect of council tax, business rates, housing benefit overpayments, sundry debt and other miscellaneous debts in accordance with all relevant legislation and regulations.
  • You will be the councils advocate in presenting cases at court, some of which are complex, ensuring the maintenance of case histories for submission to the appropriate court as and when required.
  • Assist in the training and development of the team,Other colleagues within Revenues and Benefits and the Customer and Business Support team.Providing advice in respect of legislation, systems and procedures concerning the corporate debt recovery process.
  • Negotiate repayment arrangements with customers.
  • Report on team performance and collection success.
  • Ensure customer accounts are monitored together with any other associated administration. 

It is essential you have previous experience of managing a team within a debt recovery financial services environment such as revenues and benefits, credit control, account reconciliation or similar. You will have a comprehensive knowledge of relevant debt recovery administration, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills, have competent IT skills and a high level of attention to detail.
