Infrastructure Support Officer

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) provide an emergency service that looks after approximately 1.18 million people spread across approximately 1,676 square kilometres in a county that includes several large urban areas such as Guildford, Redhill and Woking. Surrey has also been found to have the highest concentration of trees in the UK. There are 103 kilometres of motorway, two major airports nearby and there are more than 1000 sites identified as posing high risk throughout the county.

As an Infrastructure Support officer you will support the Infrastructure Manager on all service infrastructure matters and support the delivery of an integrated, quality and value for money service for SFRS. It is a very exciting role that is crucial for the fire service to operate effectively and will ensure that the organisation has the most suitable and safe working environment for its employees and their activities.

Cyclical, responsive and planned works are the responsibility of Surrey County Council (SCC) Property Services whilst improvement or specialised works are for the consideration of SFRS.

In conjunction with SCC contractors, you will provide support for maintenance to nominated SFRS sites within Surrey. You will be required to support the provision of specialist expertise and knowledge for all the buildings within the SFRS property portfolio.
In this role, you will report to the Infrastructure Manager - Operations Support and work within broad guidelines; acting on own initiative and making decisions on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, you must be able to forward plan, meet timescales and prioritise your own workload. You will have the delegated authority of the Infrastructure Manager to make decisions in order to resolve every day problems as required. You will support the Infrastructure Manager in maintaining a close working relationship with the SCC property team, working in partnership in relation to supporting all planning for future development, including new builds and refurbishments in line with strategic objectives
As part of this role, you will be responsible for supporting the Infrastructure Manager in overseeing the maintenance of the plant and machinery in order to achieve maximum efficiency savings for SCC. It will be necessary to enable the Infrastructure Manager to assess, analyse and then act to ensure the jobs are done speedily, effectively and efficiently. You will develop and produce reports on property related issues to ensure specific standards are achieved and all Health and Safety standards and statutory requirements are adhered to.
You'll be able to communicate knowledgably with contractors and support the management of all SFRS properties to ensure compliance with statutory requirements by monitoring and reporting on service wide issues such as security, maintenance and cleaning of premises, plant and machinery and compliance with health and safety requirements.

You'll be able to work effectively as part of a team, supporting the day-to-day activities of both on-site and external contracted resources to ensure maintenance requests are dealt with efficiently and tasks and objectives are achieved. Key to this will be developing and managing a system of reporting on all work carried out by contracted maintenance teams working across SFRS, ensuring that it has been completed satisfactorily and any deficiencies identified and brought to the attention of the Infrastructure Manager for addressing.

  • Educated to A-Level standard (or equivalent) or able to evidence ability to an equivalent level
  • Evidence of continuous professional development or working towards a professional qualification
  • Health and Safety qualification – NEBOSH standard or equivalent
