It’s a great time to join North Somerset Council as our Principal Ecologist.

Our vision is to be a greener Council and to demonstrate that we have declared a nature emergency, enacted ‘rewilding’ on our own land and just published our green infrastructure strategy. There are lots of exciting topics to be involved in and to have a positive impact on how we manage ecology across the area.

You’ll be part of our Natural Environment Team which delivers green infrastructure across North Somerset through services such as parks and open spaces, rights of way, trees, flooding, ecology and landscape.

We are looking for an experienced ecologist to use their skills and knowledge to influence how we improve North Somerset’s ecology. You will help to inform the Local Plan; work with colleagues to introduce biodiversity net gain; help roll out District licencing and be part of a wide ranging project to better understand our greater horseshoe bats.

You will manage 2 part-time staff and lead on complex planning cases to help meet the challenge around delivering ecological advice related to planning applications and development. You will need to demonstrate an excellent understanding of ecological planning issues and your work will include prioritising responses to planning applications, compiling reports and providing planning advice and advising colleagues on the Council’s major projects.

You will have experience in a similar role, preferably within a local authority, or hold a relevant qualification to level 6 or above.

You should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and be computer literate.

Whilst the COVID restrictions are in place the role will be mainly working from home.
