Our Newham will make these services recognisable and integrated, helping residents and businesses identify and access them.

Newham Community Wealth Building

Newham has launched its Community Wealth Building strategy, underpinned by the principles of economic, social and environmental justice; so that long-term prosperity, wellbeing and fairness for all our residents in the Borough is achieved.

As well as attracting growth and investment into the borough, the Council’s new Community Wealth Building (CWB) strategy will help unleash the potential of residents, businesses and the voluntary sector because they are the source of wealth and talent that will drive a fairer and more prosperous Newham.

The CWB new strategy will help the Council tackle injustices residents face with an unrelenting focus on poverty in the Borough, as well as addressing racial and gendered disparities that exists.

About the role

The brand new Employment Rights Hub is a Mayoral priority and this exciting new service will contribute to addressing some of the profound economic injustices experienced by many Newham residents. Research commissioned by the Council points to the many residents in Newham who are in work but not even being paid the national minimum wage.

The Employment Rights Service will raise awareness of employment rights across the borough. The service will strengthen community capacity by providing group educational interventions and training community advocates. Employment Rights Advisers will provide individual advice and support to those with employment rights issues, through intensive, one-to-one casework. Advisers will also be expected to enlighten and share best practice with employers in the borough regarding employment rights.

The overall purpose of this exciting new role is to help establish and co-ordinate delivery of the Employment Rights advice service under the Community Wealth Building strategy for Newham residents. The service will enable clients to improve their understanding of employment rights, what options they have and casework to a specialist level as required.

The aim is to enable clients to improve their economic stability wherever possible. Ensure that the service delivers advice in line with its policy of encouraging and supporting clients to:

  • Self-help wherever possible, both immediately and in the future
  • Improve their economic situation
  • Help residents to regain control of their employment

The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:

·        Substantial and recent experience of providing advice and support casework, with a demonstrable understanding of legislation relevant to employment rights

·        Experience of a customer-focused front-line advice service, in the public, private or voluntary sector, with a focus on continuous service improvement.

and an awareness of the barriers to seeking advice among different cultures.

·        Experience of strengthening community involvement through group educational interventions and training community advocates.

·        Good interpersonal skills, Sound interviewing skills, work well under pressure & be able to motivate clients to improve their own economic situation

·        Experience of delivering, training, presentations and events

·        A track record of working in a co-ordinated and joined up way, with other officers, Council services and external services, to help improve clients ‘overall resilience.
