Adult Social Care Worker (2 Posts) Mental Health

Directorate:                         Adult Social Services

Starting salary:                   JG6:- £25,481 per annum

Location:                               Based in Weston-super-Mare or Clevedon

Hours:                                    37 hours per week (2 posts available)

Contract:                               Fixed term for 12 months

  • One in four adults and one in 10 children experience mental illness, and many more of us know and care for people who do. People with severe and prolonged mental illness are at risk of dying on average 15 to 20 years earlier than other people

  • The cost to the economy is estimated at £105 billion a year – roughly the cost of the entire NHS (NHS England)

In North Somerset we are creating a new service to provide an enhanced level of support to people with mental health needs in the community by offering focused direct interventions so they can achieve the best outcomes for their lives.

Two opportunities are available to help us deliver this new service, initially on a pilot basis of 12 months.  These roles will work alongside the Mental Health community teams (integrated teams consisting of both health and social care professionals) to support with:

  • Housing and maintaining tenancies
  • Activities of daily living, finances and debt management
  • Support with community access and linking up with community activities
  • ‘Resettling’ after periods of hospital admission or significant life changes
  • Facilitating engagement with service provisions or treatments

The roles will take referrals from professionals and work alongside them to design and deliver focused short-term support packages to meet outcomes – with the emphasis on spending time with the users and affecting real change in their lives through direct interventions.

The roles will cover the whole of North Somerset, with most of the time spent working in the community with users.  The office base can be either the Coast resource centre in Worle or Windmill House in Clevedon, as well as there being the options of flexible and home working when required.   Supervision by a designated professional member of staff and training will be provided.

You will have a background working in the care sector, ideally with a knowledge of mental health; have excellent inter-personal skills, be self-motivated, able to work on your own initiative and with a willingness to be flexible and adaptable to change.

This post is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
