Community Services Officers (Libraries)

Do you thrive on providing excellent customer service? Do you enjoy working with the whole community? Are you passionate about the role libraries will have in our road map of recovery?

This is an exciting opportunity for two confident, well organised and enthusiastic individuals to join our busy team of staff and volunteers. You will have excellent customer care skills, including the ability to deal with unexpected and challenging situations. Library work experience, although desirable, is not essential.

You will be ready to deal with the physical demands of the job, including stock handling and Meet & Greet. After a period of induction, you will also be working regular shifts on your own at Pill Library. Although Portishead will be your base, from time to time you will provide district cover so you must be able to reach other North Somerset libraries.

You will be supporting customers to access books and information, including council services, dealing with customer enquiries and signposting where necessary. IT and digital skills are essential as you will be using a Library Management System as well as word and excel.  You may be troubleshooting for yourself and will be helping customers struggling to get on in our digital world.

Pre-COVID we had an extensive calendar of activities and events including Rhymetime, Storytime, school visits, author events, family learning and digital support. You will be helping the service to return to offering these activities. You will be leading some of these so will be expected to deliver to small groups.

Portishead Library is a modern building, open from Tuesday to Saturday. Pre-COVID it had Extended Access, a form of self-service which extended the hours from 8am to 8pm 7 days a week. It is a popular and vibrant library with a dedicated and experienced staff team. There is a meeting room available for hire.

Pill library was refurbished in 2017. It also houses the Pill Children’s Centre. Although small, Pill has a thriving event and activity programme, including Rhymetime and Lego Club.

If you haven’t visited a library in a while, we’d encourage you to do so before applying (COVID restrictions permitting) or check out what we have to offer at www.librarieswest.org.uk and www.n-somerset.gov.uk

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do. We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management. We offer an excellent benefits package for all our employees including:

  • A Local Government Pension Scheme
  • A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work, childcare vouchers, and a range of benefits and discounts including staff discounts in gyms
  • Generous annual leave
  • Employee Assistance and support offering a variety of employee wellbeing services to support a healthy work/life balance and lifestyle
  • Optional pension enhancement through Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme

This post is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
