Mental Health Development Worker

Do you want to make a real difference to the mental wellbeing of people in Surrey?

Surrey County Council is seeking to recruit two Development workers with passion, experience and skills in community development and mental health and wellbeing - including addressing the wider determinants and socio-economic factors that contribute to mental health and wellbeing.

The Public Health team in Surrey is forward-looking with a strong focus on improving the health and wellbeing of our county's population and reducing health inequalities. Supporting the mental health and emotional wellbeing of people in Surrey is one of the three priorities of the Health and Wellbeing Strategy. The roles will report to the Public Health Principal and will also feed into and support the work of the SCC Communities and Prevention team.

You will be involved in reaching out to and engaging with communities and groups at increased risk of poor mental health, in order to:

  • Reduce their risk factors, increase their protective factors and resilience
  • Improve their emotional and mental health and wellbeing
  • Improve their access to community assets, self-help resources and services

You will also be involved in advocating for these communities and groups, feeding back to and influencing relevant local services, increasing the knowledge and skills of other community development workers around mental health and wellbeing – which will include supporting the delivery of the mental health and wellbeing training programmes. You will also be contributing to multi-agency and partnership networks on mental health and wellbeing as needed.

To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:

  • Experience of working in one of these areas: community development, community engagement, outreach, mental health/wellbeing, public health, health promotion
  • Having training/development or a qualification in one of these areas
  • Proven ability to independently manage a range of projects through to completion
  • Experience in a role that required good written and oral communication skills, listening and interpersonal skills (e.g. use of motivational interviewing techniques)
  • Experience in organising and delivering groupwork/workshops/training sessions

Additional Information

The roles are offered as two-year fixed term, full-time posts but applicants wishing to work part-time or as part of a job-share will also be considered, as will those looking for a secondment opportunity. The starting salary for this position is £31,273 per annum based on a 36 hour working week.
