You will be studying towards a Public Relations and Communication (Level 4) qualification as part of your apprenticeship. You should expect around 20% of your time to be spent on this.

Winner of the 2019 Municipal Journal Local Authority of the Year, and host of the Mayor’s first-ever London Borough of Culture – there’s a real buzz in Waltham Forest and we’re looking for a motivated, talented communications apprentice to join the team.

We’re looking for a candidate determined to build on their skills as they work toward becoming a local government communications expert. You will have excellent digital skills with the ability to plan, shoot and edit video with residents, and be confident across a range of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

You’ll be involved in publishing a regular printed newsletter for residents as well as producing multi-media packages for the press – there’s plenty for you to get stuck into and contribute toward as you learn your trade with us.

Bursting with culture, innovation, energy and opportunity, Waltham Forest is a place people want to live, raise a family, start a business and work. The pandemic has meant that delivering fantastic local services are more important now than ever, and over this past year we have risen to new challenges through the adoption of new ways of working and innovation in service delivery which have enabled us to continue to make a difference for our residents. And that’s where your skills come in! We’re really keen to hear from talented young people who want to pursue a career in communications and public service.

Your duties will include:

  • Working with a variety of council departments to create proactive media content, to incorporate video, photo, and digital content.
  • Scheduling and producing engaging social media content across a range of platforms, including but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Nextdoor.
  • Learning to use media monitoring systems to create regular reviews of media coverage and social media output, and some web content management.
  • Helping to produce regular printed resident-focused newsletter the Waltham Forest News as well as regular e-newsletters for residents and partners.
  • Displaying good people skills – the ability to work with and gain the confidence of senior management, elected representatives, members of the community and external partners. You will need good inter-personal skills as well as strong digital knowledge.
  • Assisting in planning, delivering, and evaluating communications campaigns.
  • Documenting all work using required standards, methods, and tools.

We are looking people who enjoy working with residents and colleagues. You must be self-motivated, determined to learn and develop new skills, and driven to succeed.

The Communications team at Waltham Forest is supportive and inclusive. You will get the opportunity to work with colleagues who have a wide range of experience of working in both the public and private sectors, and who will be only too happy to share this knowledge with you. Team lunches, quiz nights, and away days are held frequently to help build the team.

The Media and Digital Manager will mentor and support you throughout the apprenticeship. Other team members will offer their support as well. Although there will obviously be an expectation that a lot of the role will be delivering work, as an apprentice we will allow you time for personal development and learning on the job. You will be given training and support in areas that need development.
