About Shelter
A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.

We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

Our Challenge and Bespoke Events team sits alongside our Culture, Entertainment and Sports and Community Fundraising teams under the umbrella of Community and Events, within a wider department – the Income Generation directorate. Across the teams, we look after a wide variety of fundraising activities which encourage supporters to raise money and provide them with excellent support to do so. Key events include the London Marathon, Great North Run, London Landmarks Half Marathon, Royal Parks Half Marathon and more. Our activities have been hugely impacted due to the effect of Covid-19, but we’re now aiming to further increase our participation in third-party events, explore new events and opportunities and understand how we can maximise a move toward hybrid events combining the traditional and virtual.

About the role

A rare and exciting opportunity to make the leap from an operational role to a strategic one and drive forward and grow our challenge events portfolio, you’ll be instrumental in innovating and building our events series to ensure income is maximised to fund our vital work. Your main focus will be on overseeing and developing third-party challenge events. However, you may also be required to have input into and/or lead on bespoke projects too. Along the way, you’ll get to collaborate with internal teams and forge vital relationships with external stakeholders to create new opportunities, partnerships and ways of working and drive growth across the portfolio. Line managing, developing and inspiring up to three Event Coordinators, overseeing the operational delivery of events and setting, managing and reporting of budgets – all are aspects of this high profile role.

We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.

About you

Flexible, adaptable and open to change, you’re used to line managing and overseeing the work of individuals, you enjoy managing, motivating and developing others and are happy to recognise great work. What’s more, you’re proactive, innovative, able to see the bigger picture and great at horizon scanning, gauging public appetite for events and seizing opportunities. Indeed, you thrive on seeking out and implementing internal and external opportunities to develop and grow a portfolio. You also know how to assess risk, are comfortable taking risks, motivated by aspirational targets and able to establish this approach throughout a team.

Building effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and utilise influencing and negotiating skills to reach desired outcomes comes naturally to you too, as does working with team members to challenge the status quo and introduce new ideas, concepts and ways of working. And, when it comes to budgeting you know how to pull together, manage, monitor, report on and making recommendations on financial budgets.

Benefits,
We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
