Overview of the role

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly experienced and dynamic individual to lead our secondary school admissions and appeals team.  The role encompasses a wide range of statutory and non statutory duties, including presenting the authority's case at appeal hearings and working in close partnership with schools, to support families in accessing education for their children.

Expert knowledge of the regulations and being a strong communicator, who can develop positive relationships with diverse and large stakeholder group, is essential.

Key Responsibilities
The role has a wide and diverse range of responsibilties, with the key elements being:

  • All elements of normal admissions - secondary transition; 
  • Managing our borough wide co-ordinated in year process;
  • Delivering a robust application of the Local Authority's Fair Access Protocol;
  • Joint responibility for the Newham Late Arrivals Programme;
  • Oversight of secondary school appeals for maintained schools and academies;
  • Professionally represent the local authority and Pupil Services at school admission appeals, LIAAG and other internal and external meetings;
  • Developing and maintaining our workflow and training documents directory;
  • Work in partnership with the group manager and other Pupil Services team managers to develop annual prioirties, goals and improvement strategies;
  • Delivering clear and robust communications for key stakeholders;
  • Providing clear and positive responses to enquiries including those from MP's and the LGO;
  • Building strong relationships with schools, senior officers within CYPS and key partners;
  • Managing and developing your team;

About you

Pupil Services are looking for a highly motivated individual, who has proven experience of working in a very pressurised school admissions and appeals service and has a strong focus on delivering first class customer service and outcomes for all children and young people.  The successful candidate must have the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with all key stakeholders  including families, senior leaders and colleagues from other local authorrities.  You must be an excellent communicator with the ability to explain comlex information to a wide and diverse audience.  In addition, personal resilience and passion are vital to this high profile role which underpins every child's start to formal education.  We need an individual to join the service to continue to help build on, our continuing improvements and innovations to the services we provide.
