Social Worker - Fostering

Job introduction

You need to be a qualified social worker to apply for this post.

The Brighton and Hove Fostering Service has been re-configured into 5 Pods/small teams to enhance the quality of support and supervision provided both to foster carers and to staff. Staff in the pods get to know each other and the foster families they are working with.

These changes have had a positive impact on the work of the service supporting and enabling fostering social workers to build positive relationships with their foster carers and to develop the service further. The pod system is based on providing emotional containment for social work staff and ensuring staff feel supported in their role.

The supervision model developed includes group supervision, 1:1 supervision, and Reflective Practice Groups for practitioners and managers at every level.

We know that our dedicated and professional social workers are our greatest asset and our ethos at Brighton & Hove is to invest in them by giving them the time and active support they need so that they can make a real difference to children’s lives. There are good training opportunities available and opportunities for professional development.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Brighton and Hove Fostering Service as full time worker on a permanent contract.

Support to foster carers has been the central component of the development of the Fostering Service over the last few years. The service has built up a range of differing support services to assist carers and there are now a range of resources for foster carers to access and the impact of this is seen in improved placement stability figures. At the heart of the Service is creating a diverse and vibrant fostering community ensuring that foster carers are supported in their role. Social workers play a key part in facilitating this.

The Fostering Service is composed of 3 support and supervision Pods(teams), a Recruitment Pod and a Children's Placement Pod. The post is located in a supervision and support Pod and our model is based on relationship-based practice and social workers using their relationships to affect change, working in partnership with colleagues in other Pods.

We are looking for fostering social workers who have sound understanding of fostering and family placement issues, good communication skills, and experience of successfully working as part of a team, who can work with foster carers and colleagues to achieve positive outcomes for children in care.

Knowledge and understanding of anti-racist practice is essential to this role.

The principal part of the role is to provide supervision and support to a group of Brighton and Hove foster carers living in the Sussex area, and ensuring that Fostering Regulations are met. This will involve recording and completion of reports.

You will also be expected to provide support and supervision to other foster carers in the Pod, when colleagues are on leave, etc.

The role will involve you matching children and young people with foster families, and creating packages of support for foster carers to help them to meet the needs of the children and young people in their care.

This will involve working with our Children's Placements Pod, children`s social workers and other professionals.

Additional duties include co-facilitating a support group and being involved in recruitment activity, as required.
