Outreach Worker

Closing Date: 3 August 2021

Do you have a knowledge of housing or homelessness, an understand of the challenges faced by people who are homeless, a good general standard of education, and the ability to work outside of a 9-5 working environment?

Resilient, resourceful, don’t take no for an answer.

That’s our Rough Sleeping Initiative team.

We are recruiting to our Outreach Team – we work to support some of the most vulnerable people in Medway. People sleeping rough may have been out for a couple of nights or a number of years. It isn’t easy and you may not get thanks initially from the people you’ll offer help, advice and support to, but you’ll not be deterred by that. Success is measured in getting people registered for benefits, accessing healthcare, having conversations about friends and relatives they have lost contact with, and overall looking to find a housing solution which matches their needs, and future away from the streets.

It’s not just the team you can rely on. There is amazing partnership work in Medway across the voluntary sector and statutory services.  Since the team was set up we’ve housed over 100 rough sleepers and, with our partners, assisted many more.  We work on the basis that if you don’t accept support today, maybe you will tomorrow.

Resilient, resourceful, don’t take no for an answer.

Is it you too?

We are particularly interested in applications from people who have a background of working with people who experience mental health issues and/or who have experience of working with vulnerable women.

In return we offer you:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Generous local government pension scheme package
  • Access to wider training and development qualifications
  • Flexible working scheme
  • Travel plan discounts
  • Car Benefit Scheme from Tusker
  • Access to CAREFIRST advice & counselling service
  • Employee discount scheme for national and local retailers
  • The Government has introduced new ways of supporting parents with childcare costs. Further details are available here: -

Our organisation:

Medway is a unitary authority in the South East of England, made up of the towns of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham and more rural areas, including the Hoo Peninsula.

Situated in Kent in the South-East of England, the area has plenty of green spaces, excellent facilities and easy access to the national motorway and rail networks, facilitating superb transport links to London.

We provide all local Government services for a quarter of a million people, looking after education, environment, social care, housing, planning, business and much more - everything from frontline services such as rubbish collection and events like the Dickens Festival to work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure services in Medway run smoothly and cost effectively.

Working at Medway Council means that you get to be part of this journey working alongside talented, professional colleagues to drive forward change to transform the lives of our residents and the communities they live in.
