Job introduction

Business Improvement Manager

£49,765 - £54,556 pa Permanent contract, 37 hours per week

We are proud of our city, and this role will have a key part to play in how we can aim even higher.

This exciting role has been designed to drive improvements within the council for the benefit of our residents, communities, visitors and the business sector.

As a self-motivated  visionary individual who doesn’t accept second best, you will work closely with the senior management team of the directorate, to take a systemic approach to driving improvement, acting as a problem solver with an imagination for what is possible, and the determination to drive performance and deliver programmes of transformational change.

We are recruiting to two roles, to work with the leadership teams of two directorates:

  • Environment, Economy and Culture, and
  • Housing, Neighbourhoods and Communities

As we emerge from lockdown, we’re looking to transform this city and the services that we deliver like never before. To create a fairer, greener, healthier and more inclusive city.  One built on a vibrant economy with a responsive customer service offer.  You will ensure that our approach to business and performance improvement is embedded throughout the directorate and we use data and performance and programme management systems to drive change and improvement.

You will be passionate about the connection between improving performance and the impact local government can have on the communities we serve, and working with others towards reaching social, economic, environmental and cultural ambitions of the city.

This appointment will play a pivotal role, supporting the Executive Director to drive services forward.  You will enjoy working at a strategic level and will be ambitious for the services we deliver. As necessary, you will attend executive team meetings and committees as required.

About the role

One of the key areas of focus is to support our senior managers and leaders to proactively understand, engage with and respond effectively to the requirements of central government and our corporate governance programme.

This includes identifying opportunities for shared learning, effective performance management and quality assurance.

You will be able to challenge and influence through your reports, using evidence, research and best practice models from other partners and organisations in developing our approach to improvement.

You will be working collaboratively with colleagues across the council and relevant organisations across the city to make connections to deliver shared goals. You will have the qualities to build effective relationships, and to ensure action is targeted where it is most needed.   And with a varied workload you will be able to prioritise and work in an organised way.

What you can expect:

Brighton & Hove City Council serves a vibrant city by the sea – a place that has ambitions to be a fairer city with a more sustainable future. We have made a pledge to become an anti-racist city, these ambitions, along with our Covid recovery plans will shape the work of our teams over the next few years.

You will be working with friendly, talented, hard-working colleagues who have experienced rapid change over the past year in the ways we deliver our services. One of our key functions now will be to lead and support the city as we emerge from the pandemic. This is an exciting time to join the council.

Right now, we are mainly working from home and can offer flexible working arrangements to suit your circumstances on an ongoing basis, as well as safe office accommodation if needed.

Interview dates: 16th, 24th and 25th August 2021
