Safer Neighbourhood Officer

The Community Safety Service works in, and with, our local communities to tackle a wide range of often complex community safety issues, helping reduce crime and disorder and the fear of crime, and making people feel safer. Working together with our partners and communities you will make a key contribution to making Central Bedfordshire a great place to live and work.  


As a Safer Neighbourhood Officer, you will play a critical role representing the Council in providing a visible patrol presence with delegated police powers, working across Central Bedfordshire. You will be part of a team patrolling our communities, listening and responding to residents’ concerns and resolving them where possible by engagement and giving advice. You will act as a visible point of contact in communities, providing reassurance, and signposting to relevant services provided by the Council or other organisations. You will investigate reported offences and complaints and take appropriate action in line with Council procedure and statutory duties. Where necessary you will use enforcement powers including the issue of Fixed Penalty Notices and Penalty Charge Notices, or serve other legal notices.   


You may have a community safety background or have experience of working in an enforcement role. Whatever your background, you must have excellent communication skills, a customer focused approach, and be able to build collaborative working relationships with wider community safety partners. You’ll also have strong observational skills, be an effective problem-solver, and be able to work independently or as part of a team. Calm and collected, able to make decisions under pressure, with a Level 3 educational or professional qualification or extensive relevant experience, you’ll be IT-literate and able to multi-task.

This post is subject to the police’s Non-Police Personnel Vetting procedure. Applicants must have a full clean UK driving licence – the role will involve driving daily. 


Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an assessment centre to look at how you perform in a variety of exercises. We will assess what you do and how you do it using trained assessors. We will use information from all the exercises to determine whether you have met the standard requirement of a Safer Neighbourhood Officer. The centre comprises of the following activities:


• Structured interview

• Observation and written exercise
