Strategic Communications and Campaigns Manager

Bursting with culture, energy and opportunity, Waltham Forest is a place where people want to live, raise a family, and start a business. We do all we can to improve the lives of residents and maintain the borough’s reputation as an attractive place to visit and invest in. It’s also a fantastic place to work.

We’re looking for a candidate with drive, tenacity and creativity to help us build on our successes as the MJ Local Authority of the Year 2019 and the Mayor of London’s first-ever London Borough of Culture.

92% of residents feel well-informed about the borough and the communications team sits at the heart of this, delivering award-winning campaigns that have real, measurable impacts -alongside expert media and reputation management - that delivers investment to drive change and create jobs.

About the Role:

We are looking for a talented, results driven person to lead, develop and operationally manage the Campaigns Team – collaborating with comms colleagues, service leads and other internal and external stakeholders to deliver the Council’s campaigns programme and strategic objectives. They will be responsible for developing and overseeing the delivery of key campaigns, ensuring they are audience centric, insight led, on brand - and aligned to the Authority’s priorities.

Key skills and experience needed to succeed in this role:

  • Proven ability to develop and implement fully integrated communications plans – using innovative communications approaches, appropriate for the audience, to support the Council to achieve its strategic goals.
  • Experience of leading, motivating and developing a team of communication professionals operating within a complex, results driven organisation.
  • Experience of managing a mixed and varied workload, with conflicting priorities, responding effectively to the needs of our customers.
  • Excellent oral communications skills and the ability to build and maintain effective relationships at every level of the organisation.
  • Ability to manage budgets and assure regulatory and Council policy compliance.

Equal Opportunities
Waltham Forest is a borough where diversity is valued and is integral to both service delivery and employment of staff. The Council is proud of its rich mix of communities and as the largest employer in the area, it works hard to respond to the changing needs of its population. We take our statutory duties on race, gender and disability equality seriously and follow best practice in respect of age, faith and sexual orientation, to ensure equality of opportunity in the workplace.

The Council is committed to meeting its four equality objectives:

  • Promoting equality of opportunity
  • Opposing all forms of discrimination, intolerance and disadvantage
  • Ensuring our workforce reflects the diverse communities of Waltham Forest at all levels.
  • Providing fair, appropriate, accessible and excellent services to all.

Respecting Diversity is a core Council value. To support the above and reduce the risk of bias in its recruitment activities, the Council is operating an anonymous shortlisting process, which hides personal information that can identify individuals until their application has been considered for shortlisting.

The Council also operates a scheme whereby, for jobs graded up to and including scale SO2, internal candidates are considered first. This includes those candidates who self-identify as having a disability for the purposes of the Disability Confident scheme.
