Sergeant (Operations)

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) are looking to appoint a uniformed Sergeant to join its existing team at the Royal Falkland Islands Police.

Set in the South Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands benefits from unique wildlife, breath taking scenery, low crime rates, small population, a varied social calendar, free health care, excellent school provision, and the close proximity of South America as a holiday destination.

An exciting opportunity has arisen with the Royal Falkland Islands Police (RFIP) for a positive and dynamic Sergeant, with recent UK, Commonwealth, or Overseas Territories policing experience, to join the team. This is a fixed contract for four years, and RFIP would be keen to appoint as soon as possible.

With the great community spirit on the island you are guaranteed a warm welcome; an ideal experience for individuals as well as families, presenting a great opportunity to police in one of the world’s most beautiful and safe places.

The RFIP has a long and proud history of serving the Falkland Islands Community having received an excellent independent inspection report last year and welcomes you to be part of this dynamic, dedicated, and developing policing team.

With a significant military presence on the island, you will also benefit from a close working relationship with the Joint Services Police Support Unit (JSPSU). Each military police officer is sworn in as a Reserve Police Constable and this enables the force to work in close co-operation with the military; to ensure the highest professional standards of policing are in place, and to ensure that we serve and protect our community to the best of our ability.

As Sergeant  you can be part of, and lead, a dedicated team, providing a 24/7 emergency service to the Falkland Islands community.  Your duties will be many and varied with a range of interesting challenges.

Prevention lies at the heart of all we do and you will be called on to deal with incidents and crimes of all types both on land and sea. Regular contact with the community and other agencies plays a big part in helping maintain our enviable low crime rates. You can contribute to that too, through the thorough investigation and detection of crime.

Public protection is also another cornerstone of how we police.  By keeping the peace, working with others and supporting and reassuring victims, you can change people’s lives for the better.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be qualified to the rank of Sergeant
  • Hold a current, valid driving licence
  • Have keen observational skills, an eye for details and a methodical and organised approach to work
  • Be sufficiently physically fit enough to meet the demands of the role
  • Be able to cope effectively with unpleasant and distressing situations
  • Be able to work both on their own initiative and as a member of a disciplined team
  • Be able to lead, motivate, and develop staff
  • Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Possess good interpersonal skills
  • Hold a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent)
  • Have recent UK, Commonwealth, or Overseas Territories policing experience (military or civilian)

In return for this unique opportunity there is a basic salary starting at £31,577 per annum (£38,998 equivalent Inc. 25% gratuity on completion of contract). Starting salary is dependent on previous experience.  In addition, the post also attracts an on-call and sergeant allowance, which is in addition to the salary. Government Housing is available to rent and any over time worked is currently at 1.5 x standard hourly rate.

A taxable 25% gratuity of gross salary is payable upon successful completion of your 4 year contract. 30 days annual leave, flights, and a relocation package are included, along with a favourable tax regime and an excellent education provision for young people.
