SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST
Salary dependent on experience- Band 6 inner London between £37,638-£39,811 (+ LWA 20% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,400 and a maximum payment of £6,777)
Hours: Monday to Friday 8.15-3.45pm
We are seeking an, energetic and dedicated Speech and Language Therapist to join a multi-disciplinary team in our small special needs school.
Parayhouse School is an independent non maintained special school which provides a highly specialised and individualised curriculum to children aged 7-16 with moderate learning disabilities and associated speech and language difficulties.
We provide a collaborative approach whereby Speech and Language Therapists and teachers work together to ensure our students reach their highest potential.
As one of our Band 6 Speech and Language Therapists you will working with students to provide direct and indirect support e.g. small group work, whole class lessons and regularly discussing progress/planning and evaluating targets with teaching and support staff. You will contribute to ideas, projects and aspects of school life which positively impact students’ communication success cross their school day. Together with a Multidisciplinary Team, you will contribute to in-house whole school training and staff development and will be expected to participate in its planning and delivery.

Qualification and Professional Standards
To have a recognised Speech & Language Therapy qualification, full HCPC registration and RCSLT membership.
To comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the profession and by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards as outlined by the HCPC and RCSLT.
To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people s/he is responsible for.
To understand and comply with Parayhouse School’s policies and ensure they are adhered to at all times in his/her practice.
Experience and Skills
The successful applicant will be expected to:
Have experience of working/ placements in a range of paediatric settings including children with learning disabilities.
Have experience of working with children and families, carers and other professionals.
Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience in, using, a range of assessments associated with children with developmental language disorders, delays and complex communication needs.
Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience in, the delivery of specialised, evidence based therapeutic interventions.
Provide speech and language therapy with professionally-informed clinical decision making and case-management, and when necessary, in consultation with the team working with the young person.
Have experience and/or knowledge of AAC use including unaided and aided AAC.
Understand the communication and swallowing needs of a paediatric population.
Be committed to using an evidence base to inform clinical practice.
Have experience of collaborative practice in a school and/or an understanding of, and empathy with, the principles of collaborative practice.
Have experience in working with a range of professionals and an ability to adapt to the communication styles and diverse backgrounds of students, parents, caregivers and relevant professionals.
Have an ability to plan, deliver and evaluate group therapy sessions and whole class SaLT -based lessons.
Provide specialist advice to all members of school staff, parents/caregivers, members of other agencies and professions with whom we work.
Positively contribute to the development of an effective whole school approach to maximising the students’ communication and the development of our school as a whole.
Demonstrate an ability to manage and develop self and others in a busy working environment.
Use highly developed communication skills to explain complex condition related information from assessment /therapy plan to clients/carers and multidisciplinary team members.
Write reports containing highly complex, confidential and sensitive information.
Record and maintain up-to-date clinical case notes in line with professional standards and school policies.
Participate in Clinical Governance / audit projects regarding the ongoing development & quality of the service.
Have knowledge of the cultural, religious and social issues arising in a large diverse city population.
Contribute to EHCPs i.e. assessing, devising SMART outcomes and attending annual reviews/EHCP reviews.
Adhere to safeguarding guidelines.
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and is able to overcome barriers to communication.
Demonstrate good team working and effective negotiation skills.
Have a good level of IT literacy and be able to use basic software e.g. Outlook. Knowledge of symbol software like “Communicate in Print” would be advantageous.
You will be a good communicator and have an ability to work as an effective and positive team member in a whole staff team where you will be required to contribute and share knowledge and support colleagues.
To demonstrate excellent organisational skills, punctuality and attendance.
To engage in reflective practice and demonstrate a belief in continual professional development, as an individual and as part of the therapy team.
Key role in Parayhouse School
Like all our staff, the speech & language therapists are an integral part of the School’s life. They attend Open Evenings, Annual Reviews, Staff and Curriculum Development meetings and extra-curricular events as well as undertaking break & lunch supervision duties and attending residential trips.
This means that they can observe language & communication skills and lifeskills in a range of real life settings and, through this and their regular curriculum observation and support, advise staff on how best to facilitate students’ access to the curriculum. This also means there may be occasions staff are asked to work flexibly outside their typical hours.
