Head of Leader's Office PO10

Head of Leader’s Office PO10

We’re looking for a brilliant, dynamic and engaging individual to join us as the Head of the Leader’s Office to support our ambitious Leader of the Council.

Waltham Forest is an immensely ambitious Council, adapting and innovating to meet the ever-changing demands and pressures on public services and local needs. This post plays a key role in helping the Leader of the Council to make sure we meet our priorities and provide the best possible services and opportunities for our residents.

We are looking for an experienced senior manager who can provide excellent strategic support to the Leader, ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of their vision for the local authority. This exciting role will see you manage a high performing executive support function for the Leader and act as a key source of advice and support. Working closely with the leadership of the Council, you will help drive the Council’s strategic priorities.

The role

This role is essential and is at the heart of the Council, providing high level support and advice to the Leader of the Council, to help them fulfil their executive and community leadership roles. As an initial priority, the successful candidate will be required to develop and run a new operating model for the Leader’s Office, ensuring the Leader’s time is used to maximum effect, taking a programmatic approach to ensure that political priorities are managed and actions are tracked. This will include ensuring the Leader receives excellent executive support, with streamlined systems and processes that ensure organisational goals and objectives are met. The post holder will be encouraged to be proactive, to offer ideas and solutions.

The post holder will be expected to form effective relationships with colleagues across the organisation, as well as external partners and stakeholders. They will need to have excellent communication skills, a strong understanding of how local government works, experience operating at the most senior level of an organisation, and of working directly with politicians.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who is highly motivated, ambitious and passionate about local government.

You will be able to build effective relationships with the Leader, Elected Members, the Chief Executive, Management Board, and senior managers across the organisation, as well as wider staff and stakeholders.

You will have experience making sound judgements, delegating tasks, and you will be able to confidently influence and advise senior colleagues in a busy and demanding working environment, acting with sensitivity and tact.

You will be organised and take a programmatic approach to managing the Leader’s work portfolio and competing priorities

You will be able to cope under pressure, working at pace and with flexibility, delivering to high standards and strict deadlines.

This highly rewarding and exciting role offers experience across our services, insights into how local government and other large public sector organisations operate, and huge potential to make a real difference to the lives of our residents. In return, we offer excellent development opportunities, plus a range of benefits.
