The starting salary for this role is £24,780 per annum and is based on a 36 working hour week.
There are four opportunities within our specialist adults learning disability social care team for unqualified Occupational Therapy Assistants based in our countywide Learning Disability and Autism Team:
- 1 x permanent position based in Guildford
- 1 x permanent position based in Leatherhead
- 2 x FTC/Secondments until 31/03/2023 based in Woking
The post holder will work under the supervision of qualified Occupational Therapy staff, enabling individuals with a Learning Disability or Autism to live more independently using a strength-based approach.

Promoting independence, choice and control is at the heart of this post. This is an exciting opportunity to work with people to maximise their potential for independence using a holistic, person centred approach. The post will focus on assisting the team to provide specialist Occupational Therapy intervention for clients with a learning disability or autism, with a strong focus on meaningful occupation using the Occupational Therapy process.
This is a frontline, preventative role. It may include assisting the team with:
- Assessing for and recommending basic daily living equipment to improve or maintain client’s function, including assistive technology such as telecare
- Demonstrating where appropriate the safe use of equipment and manual handling to individuals and carers
- Providing support with skills development in relation to client’s activities of daily living, using a strength-based approach
- Working collaboratively with clients on personalised goals, to maximise their function and independence
- Assisting Occupational Therapists in providing intervention related to sensory integration
You will have frequent direct contact with the public on the phone as well as visiting them in their own home or care setting. Your role will be to assist qualified Occupational Therapists with a variety of tasks, including assessing people’s needs and carrying out regular reviews. You will frequently be the first point of contact between the public and the service, gathering initial information and identifying the need for further assessment, as well as signposting people to other services.
The post requires initiative and an ability to recognise individual needs. You will work in partnership with individuals, their carers, professional staff in other agencies and service providers in order to support vulnerable adults and their families to identify and arrange services that meet their needs and promote independence, choice and control.
Occupational Therapy Assistants hold a caseload of individuals and carers that requires routine monitoring. Applicants will enjoy working with people and have experience of direct work with the public as part of paid or voluntary work, although they may have limited or no experience of visiting people in their own homes or care settings.
Post holders may work with any combination, or all, of the following care groups: older people, people with physical, sensory, cognitive impairments, people with a learning disability and people with mental health problems.
You will need to have competent basic IT skills and be able and willing to learn to use a variety of software systems. Previous experience of working with or alongside Occupational Therapists would be an advantage.
