LB Waltham Forest are looking for a qualified teacher with senior management experience - ideally with managing a team remotely - to head up the SEND and Inclusion Teaching Service (SITS). This service meets the LA’s statutory duty to arrange suitable full-time education for children resident in Waltham Forest who are of compulsory school age who, because of physical or mental health issues, would otherwise not receive suitable education. The service currently delivers home tuition, for those unable to attend school due to their condition and teaching to pupils who are in the local Whipps Cross Hospital children’s ward for periods of time.
The role of the Head of Service is to ensure that SITS runs effectively, including line managing a team of part-time teachers and a high-level Teaching Assistant. In leading the service, it is important to be able to both support and motivate these staff, who are usually working alone. The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the teaching schedule, dealing with referrals and liaising closely with schools, colleagues in the Families Directorate, and communicating with parents/carers.
The service has recently been brought in-house after being delivered by a local school for a number of years and this has offered the chance to review its current delivery and to look at developing other ways of working as well - such as on-line teaching and relevant digital content.
The scope of the work is also under review so that the Head of Service will need to be working with other surrounding local authorities to ensure that joint working takes place along with the schools involved, for those eligible pupils who live in Waltham Forest but are educated outside the borough and vice-versa. This will be in order to address meeting the educational needs of those pupils whilst they are unable to attend school due to their health condition.
