EMERGENCY FIRE CREW DRIVER
Following the announcement of a ballot for industrial action, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue (OFRS) are recruiting Emergency Fire Crew Supervisors, Emergency Fire Crew and Emergency Fire Crew Drivers to provide additional support to firefighting operations as part of the contingency arrangements for each fire and rescue service.
Fire and rescue services’ have a statutory duty under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 to have in place robust plans to deal with disruptions to the provision of fire and rescue services as a result of extreme weather conditions, industrial action, pandemic or other exceptional events.
EFC personnel will receive basic training that will enable them to prepare, set up and operate equipment in support of firefighting operations. The role will involve responding to emergency calls, minimising loss of life, injury and damage to property, managing emergencies until they are resolved. These emergencies will be varied and will include fires and road traffic collisions.
All activities, both during training and any periods of operational deployment, will be carried out under supervision. All roles will be provided with all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
This is not a Firefighters role and those who take up the temporary role of EFC will not accrue any advantage over other applicants if they wish to apply for a Firefighting role in the future.
The successful applicants will have the physical ability to carry out the role of EFC, including adequate stamina and strength, as well as the skills and behaviours to work with and support our diverse communities and teams.
It is essential for all roles that you are eligible to work in the UK. In addition, a current recognised First Aid qualification is desirable. You must be 18 years of age or over (21 years for the driver role). You must be prepared and available to work unsociable hours, shifts, including night shifts, weekends and public holidays. All other essential requirements are outlined in the job profiles.
Candidates will be invited to participate in a structured selection process and, if successful, practical and classroom based training will be given prior to commencing in role. Please note you will be required to complete the training programme of up to 12 days.
A payment of £1000 will be made upon successful completion of the training programme. You will be employed on a fixed term zero hour’s basis with an hourly rate as follows;
Emergency Fire Crew Supervisor - £15.65 per hour
Emergency Fire Crew - £11.51 per hour
Emergency Fire Crew Driver - £11.51 per hour
In addition, following successful completion of the initial training, a retention payment of £250 will be made every 4-week period. This payment will be made on the condition that you have been available to work when required during the preceding 4-week period, and attend any relevant ongoing training in order to maintain currency and operational effectiveness.
Industrial action could take place at any time during the day and night therefore applicants need to be prepared to work both day shifts and night shifts, notice will be given prior to any planned requirement to work.

- Those applying for a driver role will be required to undertake a driver’s assessment w/c 24 October 2022.
Start date: Monday 31 October 2022. A compulsory training programme will take place from 31 October and the anticipated duration is up to 12 days. Applicants must be available to attend the full course.
