Are you data oriented and keen to drive improvements in public service across Surrey through analysis? Joint Waste Solutions is looking for an officer to support its Performance and Business Intelligence Team.
Surrey’s 11 district and borough councils and the county council work together as the Surrey Environment Partnership to manage waste from the county’s homes and tackle other environmental issues. Since the formation of the partnership in 2009 a range of initiatives have been undertaken to reduce waste and improve recycling. As a result, Surrey has the third highest recycling rate of England’s two-tier authority areas and the partnership’s work has been recognised as ground-breaking and innovative.
Additionally, four of the councils work together to deliver waste collection and street cleaning services in their areas through a £14m joint contract which is managed by the Joint Waste Solutions team.
Now more than ever, it is vital that we use a data-driven approach to guide our strategic decision-making, provide best value to our residents and be ready for the changes and opportunities that will result from the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy.
You will be instrumental in ensuring our waste data system is operating effectively, working alongside partners and contractors to ensure quality data is available. You will manage the waste data system on a day-to-day basis, including uploading data, checking automated data uploads are completed correctly, and undertaking analysis and liaising with partners to solve any arising issues.
You will use this data and our analytical tools to support key decisions being made by the partnership, aiming to reduce waste and improve recycling rates and performance across Surrey. Data will also be key to supporting operational developments and monitoring key performance indicators across the partnership as well as within the joint contract.
You will also support the development of regular performance reports for the partnership, as well as being part of the wider JWS team working on projects to deliver improvements by reducing waste and increasing recycling performance.
The successful candidate will be naturally curious, capable of analysing and interpreting data, and will have good problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail will be essential, as will excellent communication skills, such as report writing and the ability to present messages clearly. You’ll be capable of working flexibly and under your own initiative to complete work. Experience in using Excel formulas and tools, and an interest in advancing Excel skills will be key. Some knowledge of waste data and waste management practices would be desirable for the postholder, as will experience of working with databases, but is not essential.
