Our service points include small village libraries, town and city libraries, and performing arts and prison libraries. Hertfordshire Libraries exists to help people to live better lives for longer. All of which means today’s Library Assistants need to be passionate about proactively helping people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

About you: We look for people who are friendly, confident, and outgoing. You will have excellent communication skills and you will be passionate about providing great customer care. You will also be confident in using computers and the internet and you will be able to complete tasks quickly and accurately. Above all, you will be a reliable and flexible team player who is willing and able to engage with the full range of services, activities, and events that libraries offer.

About our jobs: Library Assistant roles offer successful applicants the opportunity to get involved in a hugely varied range of activities. You will be actively promoting and supporting the use of all of our library resources and helping customers to find the information that they need. You will help to deliver a programme of library activities and events, as well as supporting the Library Manager in all aspects of the day to day running of the library. In some libraries you will be involved in helping us to deliver services that are unique to that service point. This may include, for example, helping people to complete their UK visa applications for the right to stay in this country or assisting people to use our CreatorSpace resources, including 3D printers and virtual reality devices. In our prison library you will be helping prisoners to develop their reading skills and to access education opportunities. All of our Library Assistant roles help to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

East Hertfordshire 

Hitchin Library, SG5

Stevenage Library, SG1

16 hours per week. Stevenage Central is a large library offering a wide range of events and activities for adults and children, this 16 hour post includes working Tuesdays, Fridays until 6:15pm and every other Saturday.

Ware Library, SG12

18.5 and 19.5 hours per week. Ware library is a large tier two library offering a wide range of services and events for adults and children. It’s catchment area includes Hertford, Hoddesdon and Cheshunt, as well as Ware. We have two Library Assistant posts available. Both are expected to work every other Saturday and the weekly closure time is 5.30pm. The closed day is Thursday and there is a half day on a Wednesday.

West Hertfordshire

Berkhamsted Library, HP4

25.5 and 6.75 hours per week. Berkhamsted library offers a range of events and activities for adults and children. We have two Library Assistant posts available. The 25.5-hour post includes working until 5:45pm on a Monday, two further full day days, and alternate Saturdays. The 6.75-hour post requires the post holder to work every Saturday 9-4:15pm.

Hemel Hempstead Library, HP1

37 hours per week. Hemel Hempstead is a large library with a wide range of stock and services including the UKVI service. This fixed-term post includes some 6:15 and 7:15 finishes and working alternate Saturdays.

Radlett Library, WD7

15.75 hours per week. Radlett library is located one of Hertfordshire’s most affluent areas, we offer a range of events and activities for both adults and children. Enthusiasm and customer focus is essential to help support such activities. Our post includes working until 6:15 Mondays and Tuesdays and alternate Saturdays from 9:45- 2:15.

St Albans Library, AL1

37 hours per week. St Albans Library is the busiest in the county, based in The Maltings in the centre of the city. This is a full-time post, working every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, plus alternate Thursdays and Saturdays. 7:15pm finish on Tuesday.
