Join the brand communications team at the London Borough of Newham and be part of using graphic design to improve how we engage with our key audiences – above all our residents. Working in London’s most diverse and dynamic borough, you’ll create high impact graphic design and artwork for use across multimedia channels with this an opportunity to learn and accelerate your career.  

As Design Officer, you will report directly to the Head of Brand and Design’ within the Marketing, Resident Engagement and Participation, and Policy Directorate to develop high quality, high impact marketing communications content that delivers a step change in awareness, engagement and understanding with the Council amongst target audiences. This includes producing marketing and communications materials used for internal and external communications – print, audio, video, animation, events, email and awards. 

You will be responsible for ensuring that all design output is produced to highest standards of creativity and accessibility by applying the Newham brand guidelines and best industry practice in accessibility. Working with the Head of Design, Content Producer and colleagues, you will regular evaluate the impact of marketing communications to understand its reach and impact with target audiences, then work with the Head of Design to identify and improve Design improvements ongoing.

The role holder would work on a wide range of design projects ranging from developing campaign collateral for digital engagement through to developing concepts for events and award programmes.

To be successful in this role you must have:

  • Excellent knowledge of graphic design and brand management implementation.
  • Knowledge of managing design and digital communications.
  • Evidence of creativity in graphic design and digital communications.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and the ability to make clear, professional presentations and pitches.
  • Understanding of equalities issues for accessible communications in all formats and across all channels.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and understanding the techniques for evaluating campaigns and measuring the reach and impact of design and digital communications.
  • Awareness of the political context and potentially contentious nature of campaigns.
  • Proven track record of producing good quality, creative design, including magazines, video, photography, digital content, newsletters, posters, leaflets and brochures.
  • Experience of preparing artwork to a high standard.
  • Experience of producing illustrations and graphics.
  • Degree educated with a professionally recognised Graphic Design qualification.
